Thank you for the fascinating feature about York’s power station (Reminder of city's age of power, September 19). Municipally generated electricity transformed living and was a financial success.
It was a remarkable example of what local government could achieve and one matched by many other authorities. Woolwich produced the cheapest electricity in the country - and still made a profit. I’m sure York’s plant was almost equally successful.
I understand that following energy company rip offs several German cities now generate their own electricity. What a shame that the growing centralisation of British government and the squeeze on council finances makes such enterprise difficult to contemplate nowadays.
People are rightly concerned by the increasing centralisation of powers within the EU but forget that British government has been doing exactly the same to councils, stifling initiative and local democracy.
