THORNTON-LE-DALE was invaded by strange figures over the Bank Holiday Weekend.

The annual scarecrow festival saw more than 60 scarecrows appear in and around the village. Funds were raised through trail maps, raffle tickets and souvenirs.

Last year, funds made a major contribution to a heart defibrillator for the village.

Sarah Crabtree, one of the festival's organisers, said that this year they had raised more than £1,000 for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance, but were not sure of the final figure as yet.

She said: "It was very well-supported by visitors. We had a lovely couple who were staying in a holiday cottage for the weekend and brought a scarecrow with them - he came fifth.

"We wanted to raise money for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance as they are vital to rural villages such as ours."
