THE re-opening of a Malton pub with a long history has been marked with the donation of two paintings.

Chapter 2 Bar and Lounge, which recently opened in Market Place, occupies the site of the old King's Head pub.

Locals Carolyn and Bill Richardson decided to present two Robert Fuller paintings to proprietor Rory Queen, who alongside Jackie Scott also runs the Chapter 1 Bistro on the street, "because he's looked after all our church people so well" during their coffee mornings.

Carolyn Richardson said: "We thought it would be a nice reflection for what he's done for Malton - he's brought back an old building and needs a bit of recognition."

Mr Queen said the establishment has a long history.

"The building dates back to the late 1600s. It was used in the 1800s as a polling station, as a coach house, and it was burned down about 1915," he said.

"It's not about pinching trade, it's about regenerating it," he added, describing how the renovations have involved opening out previously closed bits of the building. "I'm so proud of all the work we've done."
