A NEW artisan bakery and coffee house has opened in Malton.

Food company YO Bakehouse, which was set up by Chris Welford and David Turner last year, has now expanded to create the YO Bakehouse coffee shop, in Market Street.

It will offer sweet tarts, brownies, scones, sponge and fruit cakes, alongside Roost coffee of Malton and a loose tea by Easy Teasy of Newcastle upon Tyne.

Chris grew up close to Malton and went to Northumbria University where he gained a BA (Hons) in Business with Marketing in 2013. He has also worked in retail and hospitality since the age of 14 at Castle Howard.

David grew up in Whitby and completed a college course in art and design and fine art before achieving BA (Hons) in Design Practice at York St John University in 2011. David has also made appearances on television and radio showcasing his artistic talents.

With the opening of their own retail outlet, Chris and David said they were now keen to raise their brand awareness, including attending some of Yorkshire’s best-known food and drink events.

David: "I wanted to take the business to the next step to create a permanent place on the map for YO Bakehouse, having had many successful food shows and festivals since starting the business.

"Plans for the future include bringing production to Malton to be part of the 'Made in Malton’ brand, increasing our wholesale customer base and increasing the workforce."

Chris said: "I decided that I wanted to take the business to the next step because I wanted to utilise the experience I have gained from working for many years at Castle Howard. Being my own boss has also always been a goal for me.

"The response we have received since starting the business has been tremendous, but this last week alone, it seems that everybody is keen to try YO Bakehouse, which for us is great."
