ONE of the most scenic agricultural shows takes place this weekend.

Rosedale Show, which was founded in 1871, is held at Rosedale Abbey and includes a range of attractions for all the family.

Alongside the traditional livestock classes, horticulture and crafts, there are foxhound and terrier shows, gundogs, terrier races and hound trails. The gymkhana will also return this year and music will be provided by Malton White Star Band.

Secretary Malcolm Leckenby said entries were looking good.

"We have more entries in the cattle and horse sections compared to last year and the tent section classes are also strong as usual with another good range of entries," he said. "There are 80 trophies on offer, including a new trophy this year for the best bale of hay."

Mr Leckenby said entries came from across the north of England.

As well as livestock classes, the show will have a big craft marquee, horticultural classes, a large section on home baking, dairy produce and flowers, as well as photography exhibits.

Archive classes will see exhibitors competing for the best "sad" cake, made of left-over pastry, knitted purse, bottled fruit cordial and a jar of potted meat.

Mr Leckenby said: "We also have a full range of children's sport and a baby show with three classes for under nine months, nine to 18 months and 19 to 24 months.

"There is also a novelty dog show with nine classes, including 'dog most like its owner' and 'dog the judges would most like to take home'."

Mr Leckenby, who has been secretary for 12 years, said the show was run by a committee, including chairman Samantha Dring and treasurer Lesley Ellis.

"Rosedale Show never changes because it has such a winning formula," he said. "The setting is so spectacular with amazing views and is one of the friendliest shows providing a full day of family entertainment."

Rosedale Show takes place on Saturday and opens at 9am. Admission is £5 for adults £5 and £4 for senior citizens, £3 for children and under fives free
