A NEW exhibition has opened showing special illustrations of a famous dancing mouse.

Nunnington Hall is hosting the display of Angelina Ballerina provided by Seven Stories - the National Centre for Children’s Books.

The exhibition shares the imaginative typescripts and publisher letters of Katharine Holabird alongside, the illustrations of Helen Craig.

It explores the relationship between author, illustrator and publisher during the creation of the international picture book series, and discovers the intricate process behind bringing Angelina Ballerina and the other residents of Mouseland to life.

Laura Kennedy, visitor experience manager at Nunnington Hall, said: “It’s absolutely wonderful to see Katharine Holabird’s first ideas alongside Helen Craig’s exquisite illustrations, to witness exactly how the enchanting character evolved is simply endearing.

"There will be lots of other things for children to enjoy while looking at one of their favourite book characters. They can perfect their pirouette in front of the Mouse-Land Mirror and read many of the famous books which have enchanted and inspired children for years.”

In celebration of the exhibition, students from York University and the staff at Nunnington Hall have collaborated to produce a special outdoor family trail inspiration by the Angelina Ballerina stories for the summer holiday. Families visiting the hall can also craft a special paper Angelina Ballerina which has been designed especially by Helen Craig for the exhibition at Nunnington Hall.

The exhibition is open until Sunday, September 4. The hall is open Tuesday to Sunday, from 11am to 5pm, and Mondays in school holidays.
