PHOTOGRAPHERS in Ryedale are being invited to capture Britain’s reliance on - and relationship with - the sea; its merchant ships and fishermen, the coast and harbours, ports and wrecks.

Launched by the Shipwrecked Mariners’ Society to mark national Seafarers Awareness Week (June 20-26), the competition encourages amateur and professional photographers to enter.

The society, now in its 177th year, is on the lookout for the ultimate sea view. The competition is running from shipwreckedmariners.org.uk, and across social media. The deadline for entries is August 5.

The competition will be judged by a panel of experts, including the picture editor at the Sunday Times, Ray Wells, and the editor of Amateur Photographer.

Winners will be chosen in a number of categories including ships and wrecks, seascapes, industry and leisure. The first prize will be a seven-night cruise for two.

The Shipwrecked Mariners’ Society provides financial assistance to fishermen, mariners and their dependants who are suffering hardship.

To enter the competition and for more information about the work of the Society, visit shipwreckedmariners.org.uk or the Society’s Facebook or Twitter pages.
