MALTON has a new mayor and deputy mayor.

Councillor Paul Andrews has been elected as mayor and Councillor Denys Townsend as his deputy.

The previous mayor, Councillor Joan Lawrence has decided to step down after three years in the role.

Councillor Andrews, who was previously deputy mayor and is also a member of Ryedale District Council, said: "It's a great honour to be elected mayor. I have always been proud to serve the community. Now I look forward to working for the community as mayor over the next few years.

"Joan has been an excellent ambassador for Malton and, like her, I shall do my utmost to promote the town, its businesses and voluntary sector in every way I can.

"Malton faces many challenges over the next few years. There will also be many opportunities. Now that the Wentworth Street car park saga is behind us, we need to work hard to ensure that Malton moves forward in partnership with Norton and the other stake holders and that the interests of the community are defended."

Coun Townsend said: "I am honoured to be appointed deputy mayor for 2016/17. I look forward to working with our mayor, Councillor Paul Andrews, to move our town forward enhancing our place in Ryedale for our residents and our visitors who enjoy our facilities.

"Many of the issues facing the town are outside the control of the town council. While the emerging Neighbourhood Plan will propose many solutions, our expanding population creates an opportunity for the town economy and the many varied community groups.

Coun Townsend added: "I will continue with my efforts to persuade Malton Town Council and others to develop Open Spaces for parkland and leisure activities; encourage the town centre economy and support town events."
