A DAD who gave lifesaving first aid to a football coach when he collapsed during a game is to be honoured with an award.

Former Royal Artillery soldier Chris Corrance, 36, gave Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) to Jock Campbell when his pacemaker failed.

Mr Corrance, the coach of Huntington FC under 15s side, was on the sideline at Energise when Mr Campbell fell ill in February.

He was coaching Pickering Junior FC's team at the time and acting as a linesman for the game when he collapsed.

"I head someone shout 'we need a medic' and I thought one of the lad's had taken a knock," Mr Corrance told The Press.

"But when I got halfway across the field I realised it was a grown man on the ground.

"It didn't seem like anyone was taking control, so I phoned an ambulance and checked him."

Mr Corrance gave his fellow coach two lifesaving breaths and was helped out by a spectator who gave chest compressions.

The dad, whose son was playing for Pickering at the time, eventually came round and paramedics arrived to take him to hospital.

Mr Campbell underwent an operation to fit a new pacemaker to his heart, and has made a full recovery.

Huntington FC will recognise his actions when he is presented with the Clubman of the Year award, which is given out each year to a player, coach or committee member who has gone the extra mile.

"I knew what had to be done and there was no thinking or hesitation about it, I just did it," Mr Corrance added.

"I felt happy knowing I had done what I could and I would have felt guilty had I not done something.

"I would rather take the risk and fail than not try and never know."

Huntington FC will host a fun day at Hopgrove playing fields on Sunday, June 26 to raise funds for the club and receive a new defibrillator.

Although the device, which shocks the heart back into a regular rhythm cannot be used on people with pacemakers, they are widely regarded as vital pieces of equipment.

The event will include a ladies football tournament, an under 8s football tournament and our end of season awards presentations for the junior teams.
