A TEENAGE boy has been arrested and is in custody after a woman was stabbed at a house in a North Yorkshire village.

Armed police were called to the property in Manor Farm Close in Carlton, near Selby, at about 11am yesterday, where a woman in her forties had been injured.

Officers later released this picture of 16-year-old Connor Woodrow, who they wanted in connection with the incident, and an extensive search involving armed police and the police helicopter took place throughout the afternoon and evening.

North Yorkshire Police said early today that Connor had been located in the Selby area.

"Officers have arrested Connor in connection with the incident that took place in Carlton yesterday morning," said a spokeswoman. ""He remains in police custody.

"Locating Connor was made possible by some information passed to police by a member of the public."

Detective Chief Inspector Allan Harder, who is leading the investigation, said: "Officers have worked relentlessly in their efforts to trace Connor Woodrow, and it was with the help of the public that we were able to locate him tonight.

"I want to thank each and every member of the public who has come forward with information to assist this investigation."

Local resident Lynette Horner said she was shocked to hear someone had been stabbed, and she and other residents said they had seen numerous police vehicles and officers in the village throughout the day.

Lynette said: "It's scary, especially since I'm here on my own. We've had stuff stolen before, but never known anything like a stabbing happen here.

"Someone came to see me and said they followed a big police vehicle this morning, but strangely we didn't hear any sirens or anything. It's quite common to hear them around here as they head for the main road through the village."

Schools in the village took special measures to ensure the safety of pupils during the police action.

Parents of children at Holy Family Catholic High School were contacted and asked to pick their children up from the school, rather than allow them to walk home alone, while children who took school buses were counted out through the school hall as a safety precaution.
