A GROUP of artists from a small Ryedale village are showcasing their work at a community open studios.

The 10 artists, who all live in Lockton, will be holding the exhibition at the village hall, the gallery at Lockton Tearooms and their own studios.

Colin Culley, one of the artists, said: "Surrounded by beautiful countryside, this idyllic village, recorded in the Domesday Book, has become home to a thriving community of artists.

"Perhaps it is not so surprising that such a beautiful and peaceful environment has a long history of attracting artistic people to settle here permanently.

"Lockton’s connection with the arts dates back to the actor Charles Laughton, whose parents not only owned a prestigious hotel in Scarborough, but also a small farmhouse in Lockton where they could retreat from the hubbub of town life.

"Tom Laughton, the brother of Charles, was an avid art collector and donated more than 60 paintings to Scarborough Art Gallery and artistic talent has continued to thrive in Lockton over many decades."

The Village Exhibition and Open Studios will take place from Saturday, May 28, to Sunday, June 5, from 10am to 5pm.

Councillor Linda Cowling, leader of Ryedale District Council, said: “Lockton Artists Open Studios offer a wonderful opportunity to take an art-inspired trip to a beautiful village and enjoy all it has to offer.

"Ryedale District Council was delighted to be able to support the event as we know how important it is for artists to have opportunities to sell their work and we also believe that creative people make an important contribution to the vibrancy of our local communities.

"We hope the artists and all their visitors have a thoroughly enjoyable event.”
