MEMBERS of Malton WI have started a campaign of knitting "twiddle muffs" for dementia patients in the area.

Twiddle muffs are similar to comfort blankets for adults. NHS guidances says that people with dementia often have restless hands, and like to have something to keep their hands occupied. Twiddle muffs provide a source of visual, tactile and sensory stimulation.

Sharon Cawte, president, and Louise Bulmer, secretary of Malton WI, are leading the campaign.

Ms Cawte said: "The campaign ties in with this year's annual resolution where the WI at national level will discuss lobbying parliament to increase dementia care within the NHS.

"Anyone can help. If people just wish to donate wool or decoration materials they will be gratefully received."

The twiddle muffs can be made in any wool texture colour and yarn thickness, and should have ribbons, buttons or beads securely stitched on as decoration.

All twiddle muffs will be distributed locally to Malton Springwood Unit, local nursing homes and to anyone who would like one for a family member who is being cared for at home.

This campaign will run initially until the end of August, but will be an ongoing project.
