A TOASTER has caused fire and smoke damage to a kitchen after an electrical fault set it on fire.

On the same night, at different addresses, a microwave and a cooker also went up in flames.

Fire crews were called to an address in Tindall Street, Scarborough, at 7.43pm yesterday evening.

Using breathing apparatus, a thermal imaging camera, a positive-pressure ventilation fan and a hose reel, crews were able to extinguish the toaster fire.

The fire caused 20 per cent fire damage and 100 per cent smoke damage to the kitchen, and 30 per cent smoke damage to the rest of the property.

Fire services say they believe the fire was started by an electrical fault in the toaster.

It was a busy night in the town for fire crews. At just after 6pm they had been called to a home in the Pindar Road area in Eastfield, where a microwave was on fire.

And at 6.34pm, Scarborough crews attended a cooker fire in a house on Herdborough Road in Eastfield. This fire caused 50 per cent fire damage to the cooker and 10 per cent smoke damage to the kitchen.

Fire services said that the occupier had removed the cooker prior to fire service arrival.
