A MAN has been rescued from a tractor after it fell into a "lagoon of slurry".

Fire crews received a call from the stranded man at 11.41. He was using his mobile to call from the cabin of the tractor.

York, Acomb, Tadcaster, Ripon and Malton crews were able to attend the scene, which was in Hessay, just north-west of York. They got to the scene at 11.52.

The crews laid out ladders, stretched out over the surface of the slurry pit, in order to form a bridge to safety. They also used chains and another farm tractor in their rescue attempt.

A fire spokesperson said the reason for the tractor ending up in the slurry lagoon were unclear but "there was a suggestion that it was a mechanical failure."

The rescue was a success and the incident was closed at 12.57.

The tractor is understood to be still "in situ."
