THE author of a novel which follows the tale of seven young men walking the Cleveland Way in 1974 is taking part in a book signing in Helmsley this weekend.

"We'll Have a Laugh" details the humorous, and at times challenging, experiences the men face as they hike along the well known track. The book is full of nostalgia about life in the 1970s, especially the music of the glam rock era.

The author Andrew Nichols will be at the Cut Price Book Store, Market Place, Helmsley, from 10.30am to 12.30pm on Sunday.

Andrew said: “Coming back to Helmsley brings to mind some wonderful memories of those days back in 1974. While writing the book I got in touch with all of the other hikers and they all say the experience was a milestone in their lives and something they will never forget. We were, and still are, a very diverse group with strong characters and differing interests.

"I am the bird-watching countryman, three were members of a rock band, there is a religious history buff, the school sports captain and an excitable Greek who was prone to saying inappropriate things at inappropriate moments. It all made for quite an adventure.

"I hope the book inspires others to follow in our footsteps and walk this totally unique route which combines moor and coast in a way no other can.”
