SCARBOROUGH has been named as home to the UK’s most romantic walk, just in time for Valentine’s Day.

Living Streets, the UK charity for everyday walking, asked 15,000 of its supporters to nominate their favourite UK town or city romantic walks and say why they had chosen it.

The entries were narrowed down based on the number of nominations received and the most romantic reasons given, and put up for public vote.

Scarborough fought off competition from Chester, London, Oxford and Glasgow to win, taking 28 per cent of the vote.

The Scarborough nomination came from Caroline Rhodes, who said: “Walk from Scarborough Sea Life centre all along the front, round the cliff, passing Scarborough Spa Theatre and end at The Clock Café for a cup of tea and the best homemade scone I have tasted.

“I have done this walk many times with my husband and daughter. You get lots of beautiful views and meet nice people on the way.”

Jenny Wiles, regional director (North East and Yorkshire) of Living Streets, said: “I’m really pleased to see Scarborough taking the title and representing the many great walks the North East and Yorkshire boast.

“The poll was light-hearted but we wanted to get across the simple message that by going for a walk a few times a week people can enjoy noticeable health benefits.

“Hopefully the people of Scarborough and those visiting the area will be inspired to take the walk this Valentine’s Day.”

Robert Goodwill MP for Scarborough and Whitby, said: “Scarborough is home to many fantastic walks so I’m thrilled that this one has been recognised nationally.

“We faced competition from some big UK cities, but I think it’s thanks to our town’s wonderful views and pedestrian-friendly promenades that we managed to secure the win.”
