A SECTION of the A64 was closed for more than two hours due to concerns for a man's safety.

A member of the public contacted North Yorkshire Police at 3.54pm on Tuesday and officers attended the eastbound carriageway at Grimston Bar, over the A1079 Hull Road.

They closed the A64 between the turn off to Hull Road and Hopgrove roundabout, the turn off to the A166.

More than two hours later, at 6.15pm, Highways England, the organisation responsible for maintaining the road, announced that it had completely reopened.

The closure had created major problems for traffic on the eastern side of York during the evening rush hour.

At the start of the incident, a police spokesman said: "Officers found the man in a distressed state and specialist police negotiators were called.

Traffic was diverted around the scene and motorists were advised to find alternative routes.
