CASTLE Howard has welcomed a record-breaking number of people through its doors - attracting more than a quarter of a million visitors in the last 12 months.

The stately home first officially opened to the public 63 years ago and now draws thousands of people into the region each year.

Rachel Underwood, marketing manager said: "We are delighted to have reached this important milestone in our history. In the last 12 months we have seen a significant increase in international tourists visiting the house and gardens, in particular from Asia.

"But it’s not only tourists, locals are rediscovering our extensive gardens, adventure playground, woodland and wildlife as a perfect parkland to enjoy throughout the seasons; as well as visiting for events, including our upcoming half-term trail, flower festival and Christmas opening. Grounds only tickets and sales of our annual pass are both up as residents make the most of having Castle Howard on their doorstep."

From Saturday, February 13 to Sunday, February 21, children can also enjoy the Big Bloomers trail with giant flowers springing up among the early flowering daffodils and snowdrops and claim a prize.
