THE festive season got underway in Ryedale at the weekend with Christmas light switch-ons and celebrations across the area.

On Friday Malton's lights were switched on with Norton hosting a Christmas festival on Saturday with a full afternoon of entertainment.

Organised by Norton Town Council activities included music, magic and games at the Derwent Arms in Church Street leading up to the switch on..

There were also children's rides, live reindeer, and a Christmas photo booth. Entertainment was provided by the Bogus Beatles, Norton College jazz band and local brass bands.

In Kirkbymoorside, the Christmas fun got underway with children's activities in the town's library.

The entertainment continued with Kirkbymoorside Town Brass Band playing, Santa in his grotto and reindeers.

A treasure hunt and fancy dress competition was also held with prizes including family passes to local attractions.

Pickering was also lit up for Christmas on Saturday with entertainment throughout the afternoon.

There was a seasonal market and music from local musician David Swann along with the Stape Silver Band. Father Christmas arrived on the Ryedale Lions sleigh later in the afternoon for the switch on.
