YORK'S major stores are taking a mixed approach to super discount day Black Friday.

A recent tradition in the UK after being imported from the USA, the event sees shops temporarily slash their prices to entice customers.

Black Friday has caused chaos in some places as shoppers fight over bargains, but that has not dented many stores' enthusiasm

This year's Black Friday is on November 27.

So who is doing what in York?

John Lewis at York's Vangarde Shopping Park

Stephanie Lampett, of the store's customer operations team, said shoppers would be able to bag big bargains on electrical goods such as iPads, Kindles and iMacs.

"We are opening an hour early at 8am," she said. "It is a really big event for us, it's our biggest money day."

Monks Cross, York says shoppers will be able to save up to 50 per cent off goods "from a host of stores including Monsoon, River Island, New Look, Outfit and Debenhams".

Some Monks Cross shops will be opening their doors from 6am and businesses are hoping for a particular boost as Black Friday coincides with a lot of shoppers' payday weekend.

Katherine Sharp, centre manager at Monks Cross said, “Black Friday continues to be an important shopping event in the UK which our shoppers look forward to.

"Our retailers are offering incredible offers for our shoppers to enjoy so we are expecting a large turnout on what promises to be a very exciting shopping day for everyone."

Asda is following its national policy of ignoring the day, despite claiming to have introduced it to the country.

A message to customers calling Asda's Monks Cross store said: "The decision to step away from Black Friday is not about the event itself.

"When it comes to putting customers first, Asda has always led the way, which is why we are just as confident over our decision to step away from Black Friday as we were when introducing it to the UK."

York's McArthurGlen’s Designer Outlet has yet to announce details but is promising various offers. The centre saw a nine per cent increase in footfall and a 37 per cent increase in sales on the big day.

Argos at Monks Cross and Clifton Moor

A spokesman said: "Argos has already started its promotional programme for Black Friday with the launch of its red, white and blue Friday deals events last week, designed to ensure customers don’t have to wait to get their Christmas shopping started.

"The events will run every week in the lead up to Black Friday. Argos will also continue to offer customers competitive deals over the actual weekend of Black Friday and beyond into December."

Tesco at Clifton Moor and Askham Bar is offering Black Friday/Cyber Monday deals between November 27 and 30.

Sainsbury's, which has branches at Monks Cross and Foss Bank, says the event is "quite a low-key event for us", but said its main deals would be on electrical household items and would be from the Friday until Sunday, while stocks last.

A spokesperson said: “We want to offer customers great value ahead of Christmas and shoppers know that Black Friday is the perfect moment to find a bargain.

"Like last year, there will be a select number of products on offer throughout the weekend.

"There will also be a modest number of additional deals on smaller, non-food items over a week-long period.”

Among its best savings is a George Foreman Family Grill reduced from £50 to £20 and a Krups Mini Me Coffee Machine cut from £100 to £45.

A  spokesman added: "With so many brilliant products on offer, from the ever-popular Nutribullets to great value Freeview TV’s, this is one shopping event you won’t want to miss. Just remember – when it’s gone it’s gone."
