PLANS for a drive-in cinema Ryedale have been recommended for refusal due to concerns over a threat to newts.

Moonlight Movies Ltd has applied for planning permission to create the cinema at Pickering Showground in Malton Road, Pickering.

However, Ryedale District Council planners are recommending refusal of the venture because of the potential threat to the newts and wildlife habitats in the area, and the impact on neighbours.

A report to the council's planning committee, which met last night (Tuesday), said the applicant had stated that the development will provide four full-time equivalent jobs.

"In addition, it is considered that the development will also encourage visitors to the area, who will spend in the locality," it said.

However, the report said there was some concerns over the increase in car use and an alternative approach would be to utilise a "pop up" cinema which could operate on a temporary basis for a shorter time period.

The district council's countryside officer has objected to the development, saying it does not take into consideration the presence of great crested newt over a large part of the development area.

And the council's environmental health team has raised concerns regarding potential impacts of the development on the amenity of cinema goers and neighbouring residents, including noise from generators, car engines, traffic movement, late night activities, light pollution, fumes from car engines and the lack of provision of toilet facilities for staff and the public.
