MORE than 250 people attended a ‘question time’ with regulators who would be involved in overseeing any shale gas production in the area last night.

Representatives from the Department of Energy and Climate Change, the Environment Agency and the Health and Safety Executive, together with the British Geographical Survey and the Planning Advisory Service, attended the event at Malton School.

The meeting was chaired by Ryedale MP Kevin Hollinrake who has recently returned from a trip to Pennsylvania where he visited sites where shale gas production had taken place and spoke to people whose lives the industry had most affected.

Mr Hollinrake said there was a good deal of mistrust among the public about the motives of the industry and the Government.

“We all have to protect what we have in the local area and I am here to represent Thirsk and Malton in Westminster not Westminster in Thirsk and Malton,” he added.

“We are here tonight to listen to the experts and we all need to keep open minds.”
