CAMPAIGNERS will mark World Mental Health Day with three events in Scarborough.

And charity Scarborough Whitby and Ryedale (SWR) Mind hopes local businesses and groups will also support its cause by raising funds.

World Mental Health Day, a global campaign to get people talking about the effects of living with mental illness, takes place on Saturday, October 10.

SWR Mind hopes to raise awareness of this year’s theme - what can be done to ensure that people with mental health problems can live with dignity.

An afternoon concert called Mind Music is being held in Scarborough Library in Vernon Road from 12pm to 2pm.

It will feature music from classical and jazz to rock and songs from hit musicals Chess and Sunset Boulevard.

Tickets to see the performance by musicians David Ives and Jamie Kershaw cost just £5 and can be purchased in advance from the charity or on the door.

Later on that evening, from 8pm to 11.30pm at Scarborough’s Corporation Club there will be an Acoustic Originals World Mental Health Day gig.

There will be sets from Carrie Martin, Echotwin, Lottie Holmes, Jez Ech and Lewis Marrow.

Entry to the gig is free but donations will be welcome and will be split between SWR Mind and other local mental health charities.

SWR Mind will also be holding a street collection on the day from 10am to 3pm and staff will also be on hand to speak to people.

Through its projects, SWR Mind supports 1,000 local people with a range of mental illnesses every year, giving them the help they need to live life to the full.

Carl Maw from the charity said: “It’s important that we tackle the fear and awkwardness that people feel around talking about mental health.

"Only then can we break down some of the stigma around having a mental illness.

“Fund-raising for us is one way we can help people who are living in our community by supporting them to live the lives they want to live regardless of their mental health difficulties.

“We would be so grateful to anyone interested in supporting us with raising money for us on World Mental Health Day or by attending one of the concerts taking place on the day.”
