RYEDALE MP Kevin Hollinrake got to grips with the issues facing rural bus passengers while travelling through his constituency.

Mr Hollinrake joined other passengers on the penultimate Moorsbus of the season yesterday from Thirsk to Helmsley and Rievaulx.

While on board, he met a range of bus users including key volunteers from the Moorsbus organisation such as Eden Blyth, Helen Gundry and Bill Breakell.

“We were delighted that our MP now has a greater understanding of both the pressure facing rural bus provision, and also the opportunities to provide a greener way of accessing the area for work or leisure,” said Mr Blyth.

Mr Hollinrake was able to see how the bus was helping relieve some of the parking pressure at Rievaulx Abbey, which is undergoing a £1m redevelopment.

Other locations are also benefitting economically from the volunteer-run service.

“It is clear that there are strong social, economic and environmental reasons why buses must be supported,” added Mr Blyth.

“And we are confident that with our MP’s support both here and in Westminster, we have a powerful voice on the side of our community.”

The last service of the season will operate on Sunday. Timetables are available on www.moorsbus.org.
