A WOMAN who spent a month in Nepal shortly before the devastating earthquake has raised £1,450 to help some of the people she met.

Sue Wiles, who lives in Sherburn, travelled through India and Nepal in February, arriving home eight weeks before the disaster.

She has remained in touch with two volunteer groups helping people mainly in the outlying villages who have been left devastated by the earthquake and decided to organise a fundraising event at Sherburn Community and Sports Hall to support their efforts.

Sue said the evening was a huge success. "The total raised was £1,450 and every penny will go to provide water purifying systems, mosquito nets and help rebuild homes in the villages of Nepal," she said.

"People are still suffering from the destruction and indeed more than 375 tremors over four on the Richter scale have been felt since the big one in April.

"I would like to thank everyone for making this such a good night. I am especially grateful to Paul from Trotters for doing the amazing hog roast, the bands Tried and Tested and First Quarter, those who donated puddings, raffle and auction prizes, the committee for waiving the fee for the hall and all those who sold raffle tickets and bought tickets for the event."

Sue said she had been given a certificate showing pictures of people and places in Nepal following the earthquake from the charity Lincs2nepal to say thank you for the donation.

"A big thank you also to Garry and family from Lincs2nepal who helped decorate the hall and showed us where the money will go and what has been done so far," she said.

"Thanks to everyone for your support, we really are saving lives, and I will be returning next year with Garry and will see first hand what has been done."
