AN invitation to meet new people and make friends is being offered by Pickering Memory Cafe.

Following recent feedback, those with dementia and their carers have requested a group where they can come together and have fun, try new things and gain support from each other in a relaxed and friendly environment.

The cafe is open on the fourth Thursday of every month at the RVS Building, Hungate, Pickering, from 2pm to 4pm.

It welcomes anyone who is worried about their memory or has a diagnosis of dementia and carers and professionals living in the Ryedale area.

The group’s activities will include reminiscence of past times and events, talks from guest speakers, carpet bowls, arts and crafts, as well as a plentiful supply of refreshments and cake.

There is no obligation to join in activities, but all are welcome to try if they wish or just enjoy the company.

Bridget Cousins, dementia support worker in Ryedale, said: “Getting out and meeting people with similar experiences is so important, as is the opportunity to try new activities, have fun and stay involved and active.

"Alzheimer’s Society’s Activity Groups can really help improve people’s quality of life. They give people with the condition and their carers the opportunity to socialise with others in similar situations and receive vital support.

"They’re also a great source of information and guidance which can help people to live well with the condition."

Dementia Support Worker will be available at all sessions along with a group of dedicated volunteers.

The group is free to attend, although a £2 donation is requested to cover the cost of refreshments.
