NORTH Yorkshire’s Police and Crime Commissioner has today announced the location of the new police headquarters.
Julia Mulligan said that the completion of the purchase of Alverton Court, which used to house the Rural Payments Agency in Northallerton, was a positive step forward for the police.
The new location is about six miles from the current headquarters at Newby Wiske Hall and the estimated move is said to cost police under £7million, including the purchase price, cost of fitting out new offices and the relocation itself. The previous location cost police over £1million a year to run.
Ms Mulligan said: “This is another positive step forward to North Yorkshire Police, and marks another milestone in the transition in becoming a more innovative, agile and responsive police force.
“Moving from a Grade II listed stately home, costing over £1 million a year to run, into this much more practical and modern building is very welcome indeed.
“Reducing the cost of North Yorkshire Police’s estate is an important part of meeting our savings targets, and frees resources which we can focus on front line policing; resources which will become increasingly scarce over the next few years.”
In comparison to previous plans to move to South Kilvington, the decision to move to Alverton Court is expected to cost the force up to £12million less in addition to saving more than £4million over 30 years in running costs compared to continuing operations at Newby Wiske Hall.
The police hope to move in to the new headquarters in late summer to early autumn in 2017 after building work has been completed.
