A WOMAN who spent a month in Nepal shortly before the devastating earthquake which hit the country is organising a fundraising event to help some of the people she met.

Sue Wiles, who lives in Sherburn, travelled through India and Nepal in February, arriving home eight weeks before the disaster.

She said: "I have been in touch with two sets of people who have been doing amazing things to help people mainly in the outlying villages that have been totally devastated by the earthquake.

"The groups, who are all volunteers paying their own way, have been providing building materials and helping build homes, providing medical care, clothing, food, toys, mosquito nets and water purifying systems."

Sue said that every year in Nepal 44,000 children under the age of five died from contaminated water.

"This year could be worse due to damaged wells and contaminated rivers," she said.

"There is still so much to do to help these beautiful people who have lost everything."

Sue is holding a fundraising event on Saturday at Sherburn Community and Sports Hall, which will include a hog roast and live music from Tried and Tested and First Quarter.

She said: "I am concerned that the media news has now stopped and many of the big aid organisations had moved on to other thing, yet help is still so needed desperately.

"Every penny raised will go directly to the people and will save lives and rebuild homes."

Tickets are available from Trotters farm shop at Potter Brompton or from Sue on 01944 710381.
