A TEENAGER who organised a series of fundraising events in tribute to her grandfather has raised more than £1,600.

Emily Ogram decided to raise funds for St Catherine’s Hospice, which cared for John Umpleby before his death in May.

The 13-year-old, who is a pupil at Norton College, organised two fundraisers in three days to help St Catherine’s at the start of the school holidays.

She baked a table full of cakes, including an iced fruit cake bearing the hospice logo, and sold them from a stall outside the Globe Inn in Malton.

The cake sales alone made more than £300 and she took another £300 on a tombola. A bucket collection by her uncle, Bobby Umpleby, Michelle Douthwaite and Lucy Westwood brought in around £300 more.

Emily also organised a bingo night with the help of Cynthia Ford at the Railway Club in Norton, raising another £594, bringing her total from the weekend to more than £1,600.

Mum Jo said that Emily had organised all the fundraising events herself with family support because she wanted to help the hospice following the death of her grandad.

She said: “Her fundraising went really, really well. It was absolutely amazing and we’re grateful to everyone who supported her.”

Emily’s baking proved so popular that some people put in orders for cakes and she has been back in the kitchen making even more.

She said she wanted to thank everyone who had supported her, especially staff of the Globe, Jeanette Oxtoby from Next Steps, her grandma Sheila Umpleby and Zoe Marwood, for all their help and everyone who donated tombola prizes.

Hospice fundraising manager Carolyn Jackson praised Emily for working so hard for St Catherine’s.

“What an amazing thing to do at the start of the school holidays,” she said.

“She must have spent many hours baking all those cakes and we’re so grateful for the money she has raised to help future patients.”
