A NORTH YORKSHIRE MP has welcomed the news that English Parliamentarians are to get a veto over laws which will impact only England.

Yesterday the Government announced plans to give English MPs a veto over legislation on matters which in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are dealt with by the devolved authorities.

Ryedale Tory MP Kevin Hollinrake has backed the plan, saying it gives English representatives the same powers as those in devolved parliaments.

He said: "I think it's a sensible solution even though it might not be popular elsewhere in the Union."

Both Labour, the Liberal Democrats and the SNP in Parliament joined forces to condemn the changes, while the Electoral Reform Society accused the government of trying to "railroad this complex change through with just one day's worth of debate", accusing ministers of "playing fast and loose with Britain's constitution".
