A NEW mayor for Scarborough has been elected for the next year.

Councillor Tom Fox was elected at the annual full council meeting of Scarborough Borough Council, officially taking over from Councillor Pat Marsburg.

Coun Fox, who is married to Ros, is a retired police officer, having spent 33 years in the force, finishing his career at the rank of range two superintendent.

He stood for election for North Yorkshire County Council in 2001 but failed in his attempt. He was elected to Scarborough Borough Council in 2003 and became its leader in 2006, a role he served until this year’s elections.

Coun Fox said: “It is an honour to have been elected as the mayor of the borough of Scarborough. Together, Ros and I will work to uphold traditions of this prestigious office and promote the borough in every way that we can.”

At the same meeting Coun John Ritchie was elected as deputy mayor.

Coun Ritchie was elected to Scarborough Borough Council in 2011 and North Yorkshire County Council in 2013, having served on both councils in previous years.

He said: “I am thrilled to have been elected by my peers to serve the borough as its deputy mayor. I look forward to supporting the mayor in the year ahead and promoting our wonderful borough and its fantastic residents at every opportunity.”
