CHILDREN from Easingwold Primary School commemorated VE Day at the town’s war memorial.
Pupils planted Union flags to form the letters VE to mark the 70th anniversary of the end of the war in Europe.
On Friday night in York, a crowd gathered to watch as a beacon was lit to mark the anniversary at Triangular Gardens, Leeman Road, between Memorial Gardens and the Royal York Hotel.
It was one of 200 across the country, following the lighting of the principal beacon outside Windsor Castle by the Queen.
Among the North Yorkshire care homes to mark the anniversary was Garth Court in Huntington where Brenda Mackfall led a nostalgic musical afternoon, while The Glebe care home in Dunnington celebrated with bunting and an afternoon tea for residents.
