A WOMAN accused of murdering an elderly man at a care home has this afternoon dramatically admitted the killing.

Heather Davidson pleaded guilty to smothering 81-year-old David Paterson when she appeared at Teesside Crown Court.

This afternoon, the 53-year-old, from Sowerby, North Yorkshire, admitted the charge of murder when it was put to her.

Mr Paterson was found dead in his room at the privately-run Sowerby House care home, near Thirsk, in February.

Davidson, of Sowerby Road, Sowerby, spoke only to confirm her name from the dock, and to enter her guilty plea.

She will be sentenced after background reports have been prepared by an official from the Probation Service.

The 40-bed home is run by Orchard Care Homes and caters for elderly residents and those suffering from dementia.

Mr Paterson had worked as a welder at Thircon in Thirsk for 30 years, and lived in the area all his life.

In a statement after his death, his family said: "He was a devoted family man who adored his nieces and nephews. He was devoted to his wife and cared for her when she became ill, up until her death in March 2014.

“They were a very private couple who idolised their family and enjoyed being a part of their local community.

“David enjoyed writing poetry and had some of his poems published. He was a champion leek grower and also enjoyed quizzes and board games, anything that challenged his mind.

"He was an active member of his local church and enjoyed bowling until his health deteriorated and he was no longer fit enough. We will remember David as a devoted husband and family man who enjoyed the simple pleasures in life.”
