AN EXHIBITION inspired by Georgian follies has opened at a National Trust site in North Yorkshire.

The display, at Studley Royal Water Gardens, near Ripon, features recreations of follies which would have been created by the Aislabie family in the 18th century to surprise and delight their guests.

The follies are buildings designed to catch the eye and draw attention to carefully created views, and the sense of theatre in the original design has been reflected in the new artworks – which include Scavenger, by Gary McCann.

Gary’s theatrical approach to set and costume design has seen him produce work for leading theatre and opera companies including the National Theatre in the West End, on Broadway and the Vienna State Opera.

Other items include Irene Brown’s work Hall Of Mirrors.

Folly! runs until Sunday, November 29, and mini guides and family maps are available from nationaltrust.org.uk/folly
