THE mother of a homeless man from York who nearly died in a sadistic assault has welcomed the jailing of his attackers for a total of 32 years, saying: “Justice has been done.”

Adam Blythe suffered multiple injuries to 28 different parts of his body in a sustained attack last year which involved weapons including a drill, a golf club, a spirit level and a rock in a sock.

Mother-of-two Kelly Ann Raisbeck, 22, who sparked the violence at her home in Blyth, Northumberland, by falsely claiming that Mr Blythe was a sex offender, was jailed yesterday for 12 years by a judge at Newcastle Crown Court after being convicted in February of inflicting grievous bodily harm with intent.

Brothers Gavin Deluen, 23, of Cullercoats, North Tyneside, and Wayne Deluen, 25, of Blyth, who both admitted the same offence, were each sent to prison for ten years for what a judge described as “an orgy of mindless violence based on a wicked lie.”

Mr Recorder Singh said there had been “gratuitous degradation” and Mr Blythe might well have died.

Adam’s mother Jane, 57, from Clifton, York, said last night: “I am delighted with the sentences, which send out a message that this sort of behaviour is totally unacceptable.

“I feel that justice has been done. I am also pleased that the judge said Adam was not at fault in any way, and turned down a plea by the lads’ mother for him to show mercy on them. He said they were totally in the wrong.”

She also revealed that she had suffered a silent heart attack four months after the attack on Adam last year, which she believed was totally down to the huge stress it had caused to her.

Mrs Blythe said that when she told Adam of the sentences which had been imposed, he replied: “That’s awesome.” She added: “He’s made up - he is so pleased.”

In his victim impact statement, read to the court, Mr Blythe said: “I genuinely thought these people were being kind and I trusted them but unfortunately I was wrong to trust them. As a result of what was done to me I spent 11 months in hospital. My injuries may have healed but I still have severe pain and facial scars and I’m worried I won’t be able to work again.

“When I read in the paper this had been started by Raisbeck, I was disgusted. What she said about me is an awful thing to accuse someone of and I have never hurt a child.

“This has had a huge effect on my family. It has had a financial cost to them but the emotional costs have also been massive. They didn’t know if I was going to live or die.

“It caused my parents a great deal of distress and in June last year my mother had a heart attack as a result of the stress this has brought on.

“I believe they should be sent to prison for a long time. They picked on me because I was unable to defend myself. They betrayed my trust.”

Tony Cornberg, for Raisbeck, said: “She still has flashbacks and it makes her sick.”

Kate Barns, for Gavin Deluen, said: “He expresses shame and remorse. It is absolutely not the case that he set out to cause harm to him, but he knows he behaved appallingly.”

Richard Bloomfield, for Wayne Deluen, said: “On any view this was a truly horrific and shocking attack. He had taken a cocktail of drugs and alcohol and then the fuse was lit by Raisbeck by what she said about Mr Blythe, wholly untruthfully.”
