THE North Yorkshire Moors Railway (NYMR) is marking the 50th anniversary of the closure of the line between Grosmont and Rillington this weekend.

On March 6, 1965, the route was closed by British Railways under the infamous “Beeching Axe”, leading to the formation of the NYMR eight years later by a group of volunteers.

The focus of the anniversary starts with a weekend of mixed traction, reflecting the engines seen when the line closed.

On Friday, two locos will work a special Pullman dining train to commemorate completion of the project to rebuild a second platform at Whitby station and to thank the team of volunteers, staff and partners involved in the project.

There will be also be a photographic exhibition, Last Train to York, in the Learning Centre on Platform 2 at Pickering Station, from 10am to 4pm, which runs until October 1. The exhibition of photographs, which have been hidden away for 50 years, were taken on the day the line closed by 18-year-old Maurice Burns, now 68 and an NYMR member.
