MEMBERS of Oswaldkirk Parish Council have agreed to a motion opposing fracking throughout Ryedale.

At a parish meeting, councillors voted to oppose fracking on the grounds of air and noise pollution, the risk to water supplies and possible seismic activity. The motion also mentioned the “adverse effects on the tourist industry” and “detriment to health and to the future wellbeing of our children”.

Members agreed on the motion after debating the issue of fracking following what they described as a disappointing outcome of the meeting held by Ryedale District Council last month where a blanket policy against fracking was rejected.

Meeting chairman David Badham said: “It is clear there are many issues concerning fracking that are extremely worrying to people living in our parish and that these have not been lessened by the decision of politicians at local or national level in recent weeks. Consequently, it was felt necessary to issue collective advice to those intending to use their vote in the forthcoming elections.”

Frack Free Ryedale will be hosting a series of film nights over the months, showing Groundswell Rising, a one-hour fracking documentary. The first showing is in Hovingham Village Hall tonight (Wednesday), at 7pm.
