NORTH YORKSHIRE is one of the safest places to live in the country, according to a national crime report.

Figures from the Office of National Statistics Crime in England and Wales for year ending September 2014, have put North Yorkshire as the second lowest crime location in England.

The number of domestic burglaries, theft, criminal damage and arson incidents all fell, as did offences “against motor vehicles”.

Julia Mulligan, North Yorkshire’s Police and Crime Commissioner, welcomed the decrease and praised the efforts of North Yorkshire Police officers. She said: “One of the key markers I have set down is for North Yorkshire Police to keep out county in the top three safest places. I welcome the figures which show we are indeed the second safest place to live in England and it is testament to the professionalism of police officers and staff who make that possible.”

However, Mrs Mulligan said that there is still work to be done because not all crimes were down. The report shows that robbery incidents increased by nearly 10 per cent, while there had been 210 more sexual offences by September 2014, a 31.7 per cent increase.

North Yorkshire Police said the rise in the number of sexual offences being reported was a positive thing for the force as it meant that more people had the confidence to report incidents.

Mrs Mulligan said: “I want to continue to see a rise in reports of domestic and sexual abuse and hate crime because it is a signal of greater trust in policing. I will continue to ensure the focus is in providing support for and protecting the most vulnerable people in our community.”

Chief Constable Dave Jones said: “Together with the Police and Crime Commissioner and through continued effective partnership, we are determined to keep up the fight against crime to ensure communities are not only safe but feel safe.”
