RYEDALE MP Anne McIntosh, chairman of the influential Commons Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Select Committee has welcomed the launch of a campaign for flood free homes.

The Association of British Insurers has started the Flood Free Homes campaign, to raise the issue of long term flood defence investment and land and water management.

Miss McIntosh said: “I am supporting the campaign for Flood Free Homes which calls for effective management of our land and water.

“I know the devastating impact that flooding has had on my constituents and I want to make sure that homeowners and local businesses do not suffer from destructive floods in the future.

“We need ambitious long term solutions to ensure that our communities are protected.”

The MP said she wanted to see funding merged to create one total budget for flood defence, new sustainable urban drainage systems to be brought in, and water companies to become statutory consultees on major developments such as housing, highways and fracking for shale gas.
