A GREEN-fingered youngster has won a competition to grow the most tomatoes.

Rebecca Stamp, from Kirkbymoorside, counted over sixty fruit on her plant after entering the contest run by R Yates and Son in Malton.

The company gave young visitors to their stand at Malton and Ryedale Shows a free tomato plant asking them to contact them with the number grown over the summer.

Rebecca's mum, Gail, said the nine-year-old, who won a £25 voucher for Yates, was a keen gardener.

"She put the plant in the greenhouse with her dad's plants and managed to grow 61 tomatoes, although some were eaten early on," she added.

"Rebecca also won a competition to grew potatoes in a bucket so she must have a talent for it."

Sarah Clark from Yates, said they wanted to give younger visitors a gift and something to take home when they visited their stand at the agricultural shows.

"We encouraged them to enjoy growing their tomatoes over the summer holiday and let us know how many they grew," she added.

"Well done to our winner and all the others who took part in the competition."
