TWO men in a blue van tried in vain to steal a Westie cross dog from a woman in Dalton near Thirsk on Tuesday after the animal slipped its lead and ran off.

The woman kicked the man, who spoke with an Eastern European accent, and she suffered a cut wrist as he tried to get hold of the dog’s lead, said North Yorkshire Police.

The van was driven off and the pet was found safe in a field nearby and has been reunited with its owner. Anyone with information should call police on 101.
