WEST Heslerton Primary School has been given an “outstanding” Ofsted report for providing a first class education for its pupils.

The school, which has 38 children, was awarded the highest possible rating in every category, including leadership, behaviour and safety, quality of teaching, the achievement of pupils and early years provision.

An inspector said the school was extremely well led by a very determined and highly-effective headteacher, Rachel Wells, ably supported by all the staff along with a well-informed and active governing body. “All of the leaders in the school share the same determination for the school to be as good as it can be,” the inspector added.

“Governors share the same very high expectations as the staff and the same drive to continually develop the school.”

Pupils’ behaviour was said to be exemplary both in and out of lessons.

“They are very proud to be members of the friendly and welcoming school community and are unfailingly polite and courteous,” the inspector added.

“The quality of teaching is never less than good and is often outstanding.

“Teachers know their pupils well and so plan lessons which excite and motivate them to try their hardest.”

The children were found to make rapid progress, so by the end of Year 6, they had reached standards that were above average in reading, writing and mathematics.

Mrs Wells said they were delighted the inspector could see the support provided for every child at West Heslerton Primary School.

“He was particularly impressed with the progress and attainment made by all pupils who are supported as individuals with individual interests and needs,” she said.

“Every parent also said their child was happy, well looked after and felt safe at the school.

“I am delighted that the hard work of pupils, staff and governors, in partnership with parents and the community has been officially recognised.”

Meanwhile, the school won the Small Schools Participation Trophy at this year’s McCain Yorkshire Coast Family Fun run. The 2.5km course started from the spa and took in South Bay, Sandside and the harbour before turning at Luna Park roundabout and returning to the Spa. The event is organised by Scarborough Athletics Club.

Pupils are also staging a tribute to the world wars with a Blackout Ball at the village hall on Thursday, November 27, at 1.30pm. Children will be dressed in wartime costumes and have been working on dances of the 1914 to 1918 and 1939 to 1945 period.
