SOME of North Yorkshire's most famous landmarks are being transformed by light this week.

Now in its ninth year, Illuminating York this year centres on the York Crown Court building, onto which the artwork 'Hidden Worlds' is being projected.

Hidden Worlds is a 3D projection-mapped animation inspired by York’s John Snow, the 19th century physician who discovered how cholera spread and went on to pioneer the use of anaesthetics – saving countless lives and misery for those undergoing surgery.

The projection, created by Seeper, will be shown until Saturday evening.

Meanwhile, at York Minster, a candle-lit spiral of remembrance is bathing the Chaptyer House in light as part of its Saints and Heroes event to celebrate the season of All Saints and All Souls, running from 4pm to 7pm each day as the light starts to dim.

Visitors to the cathedral, as well as those attending the daily Evensong services, will be invited to light a candle in honour of someone they would like to remember, with the candles making up a stunning spiral as more and more are added.

On the North Yorkshire Coast, Whitby Abbey is being floodlit as it takes part in its annual illumination. Visitors can experience the historic English Heritage location after hours until Saturday.

- Tickets for Hidden Worlds cost just £4 or £3 for under 16’s. Under 5’s are free and under 12’s must be accompanied by an adult.
