HIGHWAYS chiefs are planning to spend more than £5 million on improvements to the A64 in North Yorkshire in coming months.

The works include several resurfacing schemes between Bramham and Headley Bar, the eastbound carriageway between Grimston and Hopgrove, between Tadcaster and Bilbrough, between the Staxton and Seamer roundabouts, and on the Seamer bypass.

The improvements are part of a £16.5 million road maintenance package by the Highways Agency along 326 miles of motorways and roads across Yorkshire and Humber.

About £3 million will be invested in maintaining roads in the East Riding of Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire and a £380 million A1 upgrade between Leeming and Barton is also well under way.

North East Regional Director, Vanessa Gilbert, said the improvements were ‘really good news’ for road users because it would ultimately mean more reliable journey times and improved safety but admitted it would also mean delays for motorists.

“We are well aware of how frustrating drivers find roadworks – but I would like to reassure everyone that all our work is planned very carefully to cause as little disruption as possible,” she said.

“Some is inevitable – and we ask for drivers’ cooperation while the improvements are carried out.”
