A VILLAGE is preparing to host a series of events to commemorate the centenary of the start of the First World War.

Members of Terrington History Group have completed a project to restore the Roll of Honour in the village church, as well as researching the names of the people who died in both wars.

The completed book will be launched as part of a re-dedication service on Sunday, November 16, at 3.30pm.

Lesley Bradshaw, from Terrington Arts, which includes the history group, said that for many years the names on the First World War memorial had been almost impossible to read.

“Helen Ashdown, who leads the village history group, discovered from the church archive at the Borthwick Institute, in York, that parishioners who put up the memorial in 1920 had intended the lettering to be picked out in red and that there should be a booklet about the fallen to accompany it,” she said.

“Thanks to the work undertaken to commemorate the First World War, this ambition has finally been achieved with Martin Coward, a York Minster stone carver, who lives in the village, carrying out the intricate work so that now the names of all who served can be easily read.”

Lesley said the history group had also responded to a request by Ryedale Family History group to research the names of those who died from the village.

“An exhibition of some of their findings is in the church and the final booklet, compiled and edited by Carole Willis, will be launched on the same day, which will be published through Ryedale Family History and available for sale in due course,” she said.

“This event is free and open to anyone interested in the war time history of Terrington.”

As part of the commemorations, a Remembrance Service for the five churches in the Howardian benefice will be led by Reverend Taff Morgan, himself an RAF veteran, at All Saints Church, Terrington, on Sunday, November 9, at 10.30am.

As part of the commemorations, a performance of A Month in the Country will take place on Wednesday, November 12, at 7.30pm, in Terrington Village Hall. The play is set in a North Yorkshire village where two soldiers are recovering from their experiences in the trenches.

Tickets priced £10, £8 for Terrington Arts members and half-price for students over 12 years of age, are available from Terrington Arts on 01653 648484, email terringtonarts@gmail.com or online at northcountrytheatre.com
