A BUSINESSMAN has helped to secure the future of a support group for cancer sufferers and their families.

The Ryedale Cancer Support and Social Group, which meets on a monthly basis at the WRVS Centre in Pickering, had been facing closure due to funding cuts.

However, financial support by Mark Goodson of Wayside Holiday Park at Wrelton has enabled the group to continue.

Peter Anderson, who volunteers with the group, said that in the early part of the year they faced the prospect of closure as the funding provided over the past ten years was withdrawn.

“We approached Mark to ask for support and were delighted to receive a significant donation," he added.

"This meant that we could continue to operate our monthly meetings, which allow people who are, or have been, affected by cancer to escape their normal routines and gain mutual support from others in similar position.

Peter said: "The donation from Wayside Holiday Park also gave us the confidence to approach other local businesses and groups, and we are now able to organise visits to local places of interest and have speakers at our meetings.”

“Our numbers are slowly growing as we’ve produced information leaflets, which are distributed around local GP surgeries and notice boards. Once again, this was made possible by our funders, to whom we are very grateful."

Mark said: “Ryedale Cancer Support and Social Group provides an invaluable support service to people suffering from cancer and their families.

"The monthly meetings offer people the chance to escape and relax, and provide mutual support to one another in a friendly and welcoming environment. I’m delighted that, as a local business, we’ve been able to make a tangible difference to people’s lives by supporting the fantastic work that the group does.”

Ryedale Cancer Support and Social Group’s drop-in sessions take place on the third Tuesday of the month, from 2.15pm to 4.15pm. The sessions are free of charge and refreshments are provided.
