A SCHEME which helps older and vulnerable people live independently in their own homes is now available to all residents in Ryedale.

The handy person service offers a range of small repairs and adaptation by reliable and trusted workmen.

Operated by White Rose Home Improvement Agency (HIA), in partnership with Scarborough Borough and Ryedale District Councils, the aim is to provides practical support to local people including minor adaptations, small repairs jobs and fitting smoke alarms, door locks and chains.

White Rose HIA, which was awarded the contract in April, also offers a free home based Well Being Service assessment that looks at factors like personal safety, including aids and adaptations that can assist with independence and identify social and recreational activities to combat isolation and loneliness.

Manager Lynn Williams, said: " As part of this service we were lucky enough to retain the existing three handypersons who had being working in the area and also secure the roles of our existing three Well Being Officers.

The handypersons can undertakes a range of small jobs, including fitting grab rails and additional bannister rails, putting up shelves and flat pack furniture and home safety work.

"These small jobs are often key to keeping people safe and independent within their homes."

Lynn said the service was available to everyone and not just older people.

"There are people who need a small job doing but are unsure where to go and want someone to come into their home who they can trust," she added.

"Getting these smaller jobs done can make a real difference to people's lives."

Lynn said they had one example for a lady who had been forced to go up and down stairs on her hands and knees until a grab rail and additional bannister rails were fitted.

"She wrote to us saying how grateful she was and also for the support she had received to identify other issues as well as the chance to talk to someone," she added.

Councillor Linda Cowling, leader of Ryedale District Council, said it was a very useful scheme.

"it fits in well with our agenda to help people stay in their own homes," she added.

The service costs £15 per hour (inc VAT) plus the cost of any necessary materials. The majority of minor adaptations are carried out at no cost to the client.
