A CONFERENCE looking at the area's Roman past was held at the Milton Rooms in Malton on Saturday.

Over 100 people attended 'Romans in Ryedale and Beyond', which was organised by the Roman Antiquities Section of the Yorkshire Archaeological Society, with the Roman Society and the Friends of Malton Museum.

Jill Wilson, from the Friends, said the day brought together leading experts who, in addition to considering Roman Malton and Norton, discussed a variety of related topics.

" As well hearing about Roman Malton and Norton, the latest Roman-period discoveries across Ryedale were presented by MAP Archaeological Practice based in Malton, with York University providing presentations on the lesser known Roman aspects of the famous medieval site of Wharram Percy and also new research on the important Roman pottery kiln site at Crambeck," she added.

"The role of local communities in revealing our hidden heritage was showcased in a paper on a project at Nunburnholme and through a discussion of finds reported to the Portable Antiquities Scheme. Dr Peter Addyman, Chair of the Malton Museum Foundation, also presented a vision for a new Roman Malton Museum.

The day finished with a wine reception, sponsored by The Friends of Malton Museum, set amongst the Museum displays in the Subscription Rooms.
