RYEDALE is in for an action packed weekend as events including the highly anticipated annual Wartime Weekend and Ryedale Book Festival come to Malton. Check out what else is going on this weekend:

Malton monthly food market:
Food lovers rejoice as the monthly Malton food market is back this Saturday with special guest Saira Hamilton from BBC’s Masterchef.

As one of Yorkshire’s most renowned food markets, hundreds of people look forward to it each month as they flock to the town to watch live cooking demonstrations and sample local foods from olives and wines to meats and cheese.

There will also be music from The White Star Brass Band and with the weather looking to stay fairly warm and dry it gives visitors a chance to have a wander around Malton’s many shops.

Entry is free and there is also free parking.

Ryedale Book Festival:
The theme of this year’s Ryedale Book Festival is courage so visitors to the annual festival can expect two inspirational days of readings, discussions, performances, storytelling, workshops, book signings and an independent book fair.

There will also be music, art, poetry and film showings across the weekend. Authors including Susie Steiner, Lucy Beckett, Benedict Allen and Andy Seed will be taking part in readings and workshops across the weekend. Sunday will see War Horse author Michael Morpurgo holding a reading in The Milton Rooms.

Yorkshire Marathon:

7, 000 runners are expected to storm the start line of the second Plusnet Yorkshire Marathon on Sunday with both experienced and novice runners taking part.

The 26.2 mile course will see the runners, many of whom will be raising money for good causes, set off and finish from the University of York.

Show your support at the start, at the halfway point at Stamford Bridge or towards the end of the race to give participants what could be a much needed boost as they approach the finish line.

Ride It, North Yorkshire Sportive bike ride:

Starting from Malton this challenging and scenic bike ride will head into the heart of the Howardian Hills before heading in to the Yorkshire Moors via a tough climb up the White Horse bank. However, not all rides will be as challenging as there is the option of a 20 mile route, 33 miles, 63 miles and 80 miles for those who really fancy a challenge.

Registration opens at Malton Community Sports Centre at 8am on Sunday.

War Time Weekend:

The clocks will be turned back 70 years once again this weekend for the annual North York Moors Railway Wartime Weekend event.

Kicking off today (Friday), the event will run until Sunday and anyone travelling along the historic railway will be greeted by 1940s characters. There will be various activities in Pickering Station car park whilst Levisham Station will be transformed into the German-occupied French village of Le Visham.

Goathland Station will provide a home for Pontefract Home Guard. Grosmont will become home to the base of operations for the RAF with a replica Spitfire and the Tiger Moth fly-by at 1pm is not to be missed on Saturday and Sunday.
