MUSIC lovers got patriotic as they donned union jack hats, jackets and even onesies for the Castle Howard’s Proms Spectacular.

In true British fashion the weather looked uncertain but despite having umbrellas at the ready, the 8,000 spectators remained dry as they enjoyed an evening of live entertainment and music.

Saturday’s picnic style concert saw guests set up some elaborate buffets, with some guests even bringing their own traditional English candlesticks, as they settled down to watch acts including the world renowned English National Orchestra.

Before the Orchestra took to the stage though, with Jae Alexander at the helm, there was a pre-concert performance from Gary Williams who performed his own tribute to singers including Nat ‘King’ Cole, Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra.

Katie Pryor, events manager at Castle Howard said that it was great to see so many patriotic outfits and that once again it had been a fantastic event.

She said: “It was a really great night and there were some fantastic outfits including several Captain Biggles.

“Luckily the rain held off and everyone was in high spirits even if it was a little bit cold. We had the usual rousing finale which saw everyone up and on their feet dancing.”

Soloists Wynne Evans and Janet Mooney also took to the stage throughout the concert and guests, some of who donned their own traditional bomber jackets and goggles, were treated to an aerobatic display by an original World War II Spitfire.

The evening ended on a high note with flags flying high for the finale of favourites from the Last Night of the Proms as the sky was lit up with a spectacular fireworks display.
